Thank God I am a woman
Smock dress, shift dress, maxi dress, shirt dress, wrap-dress, tunic. Bell- shaped, A-line, tulip, balloon, fishtail, long, short, wide, narrow. The list is never ending. And that is only referring to the style. Then there is the choice of fabric, colour, pattern & prints. Oh, my God it is so much fun being a woman and having all this choice. Only wish I had a never-ending cash flow too.
I am of course talking about dresses and skirts. The most important item to have a few of or at least one, in your wardrobe this season . You can wear them on their own, over leggings, over jeans or trousers so even if you are not an overly ‘dressy’ person it can still be done.
What I find really thrilling is the fact that you can be as girlie and feminine as you want. And the boys love it. Well, at least my husband does. Finally girls are proper girls again…feminine, girlie, sexy and and with a bit of leg showing. I am saying this with slight exaggeration and hope that I will not come across too many offended fellow women.Â
And no, we may not all be Twiggys or Marilyn Monroes but that doesn’t matter. It is how you feel, isn’t it?
Growing up my mother often put me and my younger sister in matching dresses, often homemade. I think that is quite cute and I will no doubt have matching dresses for my two little girls too over the years. I would love them to be homemade. Sewing is a hobby of mine and I quite often have this vision of fabulous creations in gorgeous fabric. Sadly the finished work never quite seem to match the image I had in my head when eagerly buying the fabric.
Spending my teenage years in the 80’s was great. As I sentimentally referred to in my blog ‘High waisted trousers – a great return’ it really was the era of high-waisted trousers, leg-warmers, stilettos, big plastic earrings and of course the must-have accessory, the shoulder-pads. Looking back now I realise that I hardly ever wore a dress. Neither did my friends. It just wasn’t the thing to do. I did have the odd dress and skirt for special occasions but the everyday look was very much a pair of trousers.
I spent the 90’s in London. The early 90’s saw the return of platform-boots and flaired trousers whilst the later part of the 90’s was spent climbing the career-ladder where ‘power-dressing’ was most definitely required and I seemed to live in suits for the coming seven years. A trouser-suit, waistcoat, a tie and a pair of high heels was my absolute favourite look. An alpha-woman in an alpha-male world with few skirts and dresses in my wardrobe.
Well, I am no longer an alpha-woman, if I ever was. I have found my alpha-male and are happy to be the all female partner. I will forever love my jeans and I could not live without several pairs of them but I really, really love the idea of wearing dresses and skirts for everyday wear. Just like they did in the old days. I would like to be a bit more feminine in my dress-style than I currently am and I am slowly working on it. It does take a bit more forward-planning as you just can’t seem to slip in to a dress with as much ease as you can with a pair of jeans. Not me anyway, not yet, perhaps it will come with time.
So, must hint to husband that more dresses are required. For his benefit as much as for mine (might be a good way of selling the idea to him and to deter the subject from spending his money).
My favourite on our website at the moment is the checked ‘country & western style’ orange & red Firetrap dress.
I also love the grey La Belle dress from Great Plains. If you think that dress looks a bit plain it is very, very flattering on the body. It really does seem to magically make a few inches around the waist disappear. It’s magic!
Finally, the most gorgeous dresses of the season are the Avoca Anthology dresses. They simply make your head spin. It really was love at first sight.
So Aron my darling husband, if you where thinking of bringing me a surprise, any dress will do… really. Or a selection would be ok if you struggle to choose. And if you are feeling very generous… a sexy pair of high heels and a matching cardi would be received with open arms and much gratitude. Love you forever.
