My Life As A ‘Fashion-Widow’

Filed under: All Articles, Malin Reports - Aron @ 9:01 pm -

This is a really exciting time of the year in the world of fashion. Every day at the moment is like Christmas with boxes full of new spring-stock arriving to our shops and to getmyfashion-warehouse. It is also the time of the year when fashion-buyers across the globe need to be thinking about chunky knitwear and winter-warmers as the buying-season for autumn/winter 2007 hits the road.
This week, Aron and Angela, my husband and mother-in-law, have been up in London to raid the shows in hope for new innovative collections and labels and of course to visit our current suppliers. Read my full report under ‘Fashion talk’ next week including London Fashion Week.
Deep down I know that they are working really long days and both their brains and feet are pretty deepfried by the end of each day going from show to show and supplier showrooms all over London. But all I can think about and visualise in front of me are skinny models in perfect dresscodes crowding the streets, rooms full of new gorgeous collections of clothes, shoes & accessories, shopping at Selfridges, lunch at Yo!sushi (wouldn’t risk Itsu…) coffee at Starbucks, champagne at Sandersons (my old haunt ) or Claridges at the end of a long day, dinner in some posh restaurant surrounded by beautiful people and most of all an uninterrupted good night’s sleep in a luxury hotelroom… all whilst I am at home dealing with the usual daily chores of looking after the kids (beautiful though they are) keeping the household intact and making sure all parcels get sent with the correct items, at the right time and to the right customers at getmyfashion.com.
Now, Aron and Angela might nip in to Selfridges if they have five minutes spare at the end of the day, they might also grab a coffee at Starbucks if there is one nearby at some point during the day and I am sure they see lots of beautiful people in the latest gear strutting their stuff thinking they are the absolute business but when it comes to champagne and dinner it is more likely to be a quiet drink and dinner at the hotel before retiring to the hotelroom for an early night. Just to clarify… under normal circumstances, meaning when it is just about a leisurely London-trip rather than business, Angela would most definitely end the day with a glass of bubbly at Claridges. Not only to indulge in luxury but also with secret hopes of spotting Gordon on location. And with regards to Sandersons, Aron and I had a glass of champagne at the Long Bar on our first date almost five years ago now. But that is another story altogether.
I am already a ‘surfing-widow’ and I am therefore quite used to being left for hours at a time either on a beach somewhere or in winter at home. In summer I certainly do not mind being plonked on a sunny beach (especially in some tropical country) and in winter I am happy to stay at home. The thought of entering the sea when the thermometer shows little more than 5°C just doesn’t do it for me.
However, when it comes to being a ‘fashion-widow’ there are times when I struggle a little. There is a difference between a few hours on a beach with husband at sea or a few days at home with husband at London Fashion Week. Of course I am dreaming of glamorous living and a life of luxury every now and again whilst I am working the livingroom, Dyson in hand, baby on hip whilst my toddler-daughter creates havoc in the kitchen pulling out every kitchen-utensil within her reach.
Then again, what is a day at London Fashion Week compared to spending a day with my children? Hm… a dream. So whilst I keep dreaming, and a dream it is because I wouldn’t want to change anything at the moment, I am happy to have second hand experiences. At least Aron got me a ‘LFW-bag’ which has now become my ‘baby-bag’ and accompanies me, buggy and children on our daily outings. Gosh, it can’t get much more glamorous and luxury than that! Aren’t I a yummy mummy, or what???
