Smock & Boyfriend, Yes! But Don’t Hide Your Curves!

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Never has there been so much talk about the female bodyshape as over the last year. The discussions have mainly circled around the subject of body mass index (BMI’s) and the American size 0! Gossip magazines are continuing to print pictures of ever disappearing models and other celebrities as their pounds fall off faster than I have time to finish my daily chocolate-bar (hence, why I have a long way to go to size 0…). Especially with the world’s Fashion Weeks, London, New York, Paris and Milan etc just been and gone the discussions and controversies are hotter than ever. Who creates these desires for young girls wanting to look like skeletons? Who finds it attractive? And to all designers out there; ‘do we really need to be that skinny to look good in your clothes?’
One thing is for sure, it is not to attract more men. We all know that majority of men likes a bit of flesh and a few curves rather than just skin and bone. And what’s more romantic than a nice meal together, a bottle of vino and for added atmosphere a couple of candles? Imagine having dinner with your size 0 girlfriend. You might be lucky to share a leaf of lettuce let alone a bottle of wine. Not very romantic at all.
I am a size 10 with a few rounded corners, especially around the ‘middle-bit’. I am still carrying a bit of post-baby weight but starting to feel more and more that my body is returning to its’ original shape, and I quite like my shape. Of course there are always areas which could be improved but overall it isn’t too bad.
Eager to loose the last few pounds and eager to get myself a new pair of jeans to celebrate the return of my body I can’t help but being a little disappointed with the fact that the two big trends this season are boyfriend jeans and smock tops and dresses. So much for showing off my new shape after a year of wearing nothing but maternity-wear (boyfriend-style jeans and smock-tops and dresses that is). So ok, I don’t have to go down that baggy, voluminous route this season. That is a good thing. This season you can pretty much display any shape, size or style as you want so I could of course go down the skinny route and little shift-dresses. But the thing is, I really like the boyfriend look and the smock-tops. I am not really a girlie-girl and as much as I want to look a bit more womanly and softer then I have done you just can’t do 2007 without a bit of volume. Well, perhaps it is just as well while I get myself ready and in shape for the summer (I say that every year…). Then I can pull on the skinny ones, the shorts and the little tight dress. At least in my dreams, that is.
Smock, boyfriend and other voluminous pieces doesn’t necessarily mean that you completely have to hide every curve you’ve got. Do the smock dress and show off a bit of leg. Add some heels and you can’t go wrong. Put something a bit female with the boyfriend jean and you’ll have a good compromise.
So to all fellow post-natal women, spring-trends just couldn’t get any better with a few extra ounces on the bum.

Another Day In The Life Of A ‘Fashion-Widow’

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Another week and Aron and Angela have once again set off for London on a buying-mission.
Once again I have been left behind at home carrying on with my usual normal nappy-filled (literally) life. My daughters’ nappies that is.

London Fashion Week

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Last week saw the take off of the buying-season with London Fashion Week heading the game. We were there!
Marquees on the grounds of the Natural History Museum in London’s Kensington hosted no less than 200 brands. According to the organisers of the fashion-event of the year it was the best LFW ever with a 30% bigger exhibition and the best ever attendance.
London Fashion Week is all about getting a good feel for what trends we can expect for the next season. With the New Generation Designers becoming more and more established there are many interesting new labels out there.
Dresses and heavy knits seem to be the style-hits for Autumn/Winter 2007 and colours similar to this season are still going strong with greys and blacks being the big basics.
Lots of accessories; bags, jewellery etc were showing which we obviously had to have a little browse through.
What we found really interesting was the Estethica section which seem to be growing in size and reputation every year. As everyone are talking about fair-trade, recycling and organics these days so is the fashion-industry with a lot of new labels popping up using organic cotton and other eco-friendly fabrics. We definitely find this interesting and are looking into different labels for next season.
LFW was a good start to our buying-adventure. Over the next few weeks we will be visiting all our current suppliers and a few new ones with hopes for exciting, interesting and vibrant collections for you for the next season. Watch this space!

My Life As A ‘Fashion-Widow’

Friday, February 16th, 2007

This is a really exciting time of the year in the world of fashion. Every day at the moment is like Christmas with boxes full of new spring-stock arriving to our shops and to getmyfashion-warehouse. It is also the time of the year when fashion-buyers across the globe need to be thinking about chunky knitwear and winter-warmers as the buying-season for autumn/winter 2007 hits the road.
This week, Aron and Angela, my husband and mother-in-law, have been up in London to raid the shows in hope for new innovative collections and labels and of course to visit our current suppliers. Read my full report under ‘Fashion talk’ next week including London Fashion Week.
Deep down I know that they are working really long days and both their brains and feet are pretty deepfried by the end of each day going from show to show and supplier showrooms all over London. But all I can think about and visualise in front of me are skinny models in perfect dresscodes crowding the streets, rooms full of new gorgeous collections of clothes, shoes & accessories, shopping at Selfridges, lunch at Yo!sushi (wouldn’t risk Itsu…) coffee at Starbucks, champagne at Sandersons (my old haunt ) or Claridges at the end of a long day, dinner in some posh restaurant surrounded by beautiful people and most of all an uninterrupted good night’s sleep in a luxury hotelroom… all whilst I am at home dealing with the usual daily chores of looking after the kids (beautiful though they are) keeping the household intact and making sure all parcels get sent with the correct items, at the right time and to the right customers at getmyfashion.com.
Now, Aron and Angela might nip in to Selfridges if they have five minutes spare at the end of the day, they might also grab a coffee at Starbucks if there is one nearby at some point during the day and I am sure they see lots of beautiful people in the latest gear strutting their stuff thinking they are the absolute business but when it comes to champagne and dinner it is more likely to be a quiet drink and dinner at the hotel before retiring to the hotelroom for an early night. Just to clarify… under normal circumstances, meaning when it is just about a leisurely London-trip rather than business, Angela would most definitely end the day with a glass of bubbly at Claridges. Not only to indulge in luxury but also with secret hopes of spotting Gordon on location. And with regards to Sandersons, Aron and I had a glass of champagne at the Long Bar on our first date almost five years ago now. But that is another story altogether.
I am already a ‘surfing-widow’ and I am therefore quite used to being left for hours at a time either on a beach somewhere or in winter at home. In summer I certainly do not mind being plonked on a sunny beach (especially in some tropical country) and in winter I am happy to stay at home. The thought of entering the sea when the thermometer shows little more than 5°C just doesn’t do it for me.
However, when it comes to being a ‘fashion-widow’ there are times when I struggle a little. There is a difference between a few hours on a beach with husband at sea or a few days at home with husband at London Fashion Week. Of course I am dreaming of glamorous living and a life of luxury every now and again whilst I am working the livingroom, Dyson in hand, baby on hip whilst my toddler-daughter creates havoc in the kitchen pulling out every kitchen-utensil within her reach.
Then again, what is a day at London Fashion Week compared to spending a day with my children? Hm… a dream. So whilst I keep dreaming, and a dream it is because I wouldn’t want to change anything at the moment, I am happy to have second hand experiences. At least Aron got me a ‘LFW-bag’ which has now become my ‘baby-bag’ and accompanies me, buggy and children on our daily outings. Gosh, it can’t get much more glamorous and luxury than that! Aren’t I a yummy mummy, or what???

Sorry Valentine, Fashion Before Passion!

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Another year is gone and tomorrow is the for some dreaded Valentine’s Day while others walk around with tingly feelings full of excitement of what tomorrow will bring… dozens of red roses, little delicate chocolate truffles in red heartshaped boxes, some sexy, lacy underwear from Figleaves or for the very lucky lady some sparkly diamonds.
A recent survey shows however that “fashion beats passion”, so to all men out there struggling to decide between champagne and knickers, go for neither. Instead head for the designer-shops or click our product-pages for a little something to add to her wardrobe. According to this American survey women would be willing to sacrifice 15 months of passion for nice outfits and a glam look. So why don’t give her both?

‘Geek Chic’ – The New Chav?

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Am I the only one who struggle to keep up with all new titles and descriptions of today’s fashion & celeb-world? The ‘chav-phase’ came and went and I still don’t know for sure what exactly chav stands for and the exact look required to fall into this category. I obviously have a vision of Coleen McLoughlin in front of me, bling designer-bags and candy-coloured velour tracksuit but that is as far as it goes.
The latest thing seems to be ‘geek chic’ which has apparently “become an underground phenomenon among the internet generation for its ‘ironic’ statement that being a geek is now cool”, reports The Mail on Sunday… and then it must of course be true. And if your style and your clothes don’t make it obvious you can even buy a ‘GEEK’-badge, by Luella Bartley, as sported on Peaches Geldof last week. I can’t quite relate to a 17-year old, but as she is of celeb-status I am sure she will have many followers. Another ‘geek chic’ individual is apparently Betty, or Ugly Betty. Something tells me that Ugly Betty is actually the one responsible for this new craze.
Thinking about it, whoever is responsible this might actually not be such a bad status after all. Could it possibly be a term to describe yourself as on a bad hairday? I don’t think I would aim to look like a geek on a permanent basis. However, on a day when things are not quite working in your favour, e.g. the kids are playing up, hubby had to rush off early to work leaving you with no time to sort yourself out; hair needs washing but no time, turns out the dress you were planning on wearing have sick-stains on the shoulders from youngest daughter’s daily burp-emission, there is a ladder on your leggings and the only knickers clean are the ones from the ‘spare pile’ which normally only comes out once/month. Normally nobody will of course be able to know what knickers I am wearing but today I am stuck with big knickers & jeans which equals… yes, visible knicker-line. ‘Not a good look’, as my friend would say. So, need to get ‘geek’-badge for days as described. Can’t just rely on my surroundings understanding that my wrecked-and-stressed-out-mumsy-look could potentially be very chic. Therefore, don’t despair. Should we worry about the daily effort involved at trying to reach yummy-mummyhood when we could just be comfy, be merry and be geeks? Chic geeks, of course, which one would assume require no effort. Or does it? One would still need to get the geeky look right to actually qualify for the chic category. Perhaps equally as much work? Oh, what to do? The joy of womanhood… motherhood… geekhood. What will be next?

Grown-Up Fashion; How To Shop.

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

If you have read my blog on 29th January we would have established what stipulates a grown-up and what grown-up fashion is. Let’s take it a step further and look at it from a different angel; grown-up shopping.
I am sure I am not alone at having made quite a few fashion faux-pas and shopping-disasters wasting money which already were in short supply in my younger years. Actually saying that, my disposable income was probably higher at the time with only myself to look after and support, no mortgage, no children and with a slightly less expensive taste when it comes to life’s temptations and pleasures.
I have grown up since… well, a bit anyway. At least I look a bit older (not sure that is a good thing), feel a bit wiser and a bit smarter when I shop. The adrenalin still pumps and my heart beats faster after a good retail or online-session, that will probably never change, but I shop differently.
The trick is to being able to spot and pick out key-pieces from each shop, label and collection. Something which Angela Hosie, our buyer and co-owner, is very good at. It’s knowing what each label stands for and does well.
This is our philosophy at getmyfashion.com. We will be offering key-pieces from every label, hence why you will never see a full collection from any label on our website. We will pick the good bits only, the ‘cream of the cake’.
To give you a few examples; for our basic tops, t-shirts and plain jeans you can’t find much better fits, styles and quality at a better price than Great Plains. French Connection offers a fairly cutting edge range, quite sophisticated and grown-up at a fraction of the price compared to a similar designer-piece. Farhi does great knitwear and dressy pieces, Sandwich is also good with the needles and Thomas Burberry beats most with their coats every time, see the new fabulous mac just out.
If you are familiar with our shops, you probably know how we work and how it works for a look and for you.
That is why, when shopping from us, you know that you are on to a good thing. Never doubt us or you could go wrong.
